Baseball at Clemens Field might be coming sooner than expected.

The Hannibal Cavemen won’t be hitting the field until May 31 against the DuBois County Bombers, but baseball fans won’t have to wait that long to get back into Clemens Field.

Hannibal-LaGrange University and the Cavemen have agreed to a deal that lets the Trojan play at Clemens Field during the 2012 season.

HLGU will be hosting 12 of its home games at Clemens Field.

In exchange for using the field, HLGU will help with field maintanence for when they use it, so when the Cavemen are preparing to play this summer it isn’t quite the rush it was in the 2011 season.

John Civitate, the general manager of the Cavemen, said he hopes this will bring more teams out to Clemens Field.

“We’re hoping it will entice more teams to come to Hannibal, maybe some tournaments if we can get going and let the other teams see this field, fill some hotels up around town,” Civitate said.

Clemens Field has played host to some HLGU events in the past, including the AMC tournament in 2010.

Ten-year HLGU Manager Clay Biggs said the team is excited to use Clemens Field at points in the 2012 season.

“We’re excited to play on a field of this quality,” Biggs said. “It’s a good deal for us because we’ll still play some of our games on campus, but we will also have the amenities here and the field quality here to use and our kids will be excited and it will be a fun venue for college baseball.”

Biggs said that he hopes playing some games at Clemens Field will raise a bit of excitement for the upcoming HLGU season.

The coach added it will be a nice place to show recruits.

“We’re also excited to share this with our recruits,” Biggs said. “To play on a field like this is exciting for recruits. We are all excited for this.”

The first game of the season for HLGU is set for Friday. Feb. 24, in Batesville, Ark., against Lyon College.

The first action at Hannibal for the Trojans, as well as the first game at Clemens Field, takes place on March 9 against Harris-Stowe State University.
