Justin McGhee did his best to send the Cavemen back to Hannibal with a winning record.

McGhee was tabbed to start the final game of Hannibal’s four-day three-game road trip. Making a stop in Dupage for a game with  the Dragons, McGhee was dealing.

The Hannibal-LaGrange product tossed eight scoreless innings in his first start for the Cavemen. He gave up three hits and two walks while striking out eight Dragons en route to his first win of the season. The Hannibal bats put up three runs to give the Cavemen a 3-0 victory.

For the first five innings of the ball game, McGhee was trading zeros with Dupage starter Brian de la Torriente. A week ago at Clemens Field, de la Torriente baffled the Hannibal bats for much of the game and helped lead the Dragons to a 3-0 win. Friday the Cavemen got to the Dupage starter before the ninth inning.

Right fielder Patrick Sheehan led off the top of the sixth inning with a single. The next batter, L.J. Watson, then popped a double for an RBI and the 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Watson would score to give the Cavemen a 2-0 lead.

With the lead, McGhee cruised. He needed just 105 pitches to toss eight complete innings, the longest of any Hannibal starter this season. He worked quickly, too — the game was completed in just a over two hours.

The Cavemen would add another run in the top of the ninth to add a little more cushion to the lead. Matt Burton walked with one out and scored on a two-out single by Redlands Community College teammate Nick Rountree.

James Hudelson made the bottom of the ninth interesting — he loaded the bases — but eventually got all three outs without letting a Dragon score to pick up a save and secure the Cavemen win. Hudelson now has two saves on the year.

The Cavemen head back to Hannibal for a game today with the DuBois County Bombers sporting a 4-2 record — the first time in team history the team has been two games over the .500 mark. First pitch for Saturdays game at Clemens Field will be at 6:35 p.m. The Cavemen will also play a doubleheader on Sunday in Quincy. The first game starts at 5 p.m.
