Trojans fall to Lynx

Hannibal-LaGrange (1-12, 0-3 MAMVIC) fell to Lindenwood University at Belleville in four sets Thursday night.
 
Junior Jake Wollenberg and senior John McCanna led the Trojans in kills as Wollenberg finished the night with 19 kills and 12 digs and McCanna came away with 12 kills.  Junior Ryan Rams led the team in assists with 42 while junior Benji Sommariba finished with 11 digs on the night.
 
The Trojans and Lynx battled back and forth during the start of the opening set.  The Lynx climbed out to a 2-0 lead before McCanna’s kill put Hannibal-LaGrange on the board.  The Trojans and Lynx each took three of the next six points before junior Cory Cahill’s kill tied the set 5-5. Hannibal-LaGrange grabbed its first lead and capped off a 3-0 run after a kill from Wollenberg put the Trojans up 6-5.
 
The lead didn’t last long for Hannibal-LaGrange as the Lynx used a 3-0 run of its own to grab a two point advantage.   The Trojans narrowed the Lynx lead down to one five times throughout the remainder of the set but never found itself in front as the Lynx took set one 25-19.
 
The Trojans and Lynx shared eight ties during the first 20 points of the second set.  With the set tied 10-10, the Lynx used a 5-0 run to pull ahead and force a timeout by the Trojans.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange finally put an end to the Lynx run after a kill by sophomore Danny Cabrera brought the Trojans within four of Lindenwood at Belleville.  The Lynx won three of the next four points before Wollenberg’s kill started a 6-0 run for the Trojans to tie the contest 18-18.
 
McCanna’s kill, three serves later, gave the Trojans its second lead of the set at 20-19 and capped off the Trojan comeback from six down.  Hannibal-LaGrange lost its lead during the next two points but managed to tie the set up several times before finally taking a 24-23 lead.
 
After a Lynx kill tied the set back up, the Trojans took the final two points to win the set 26-24 and tie the match at one game apiece.
 
The third set between the Trojans and Lynx featured much of the same intensity as the first two games of the night.  The Trojans and Lynx once again battled back and forth during opening points before Lindenwood at Belleville used a 5-2 run to open up a 12-9 lead.
 
The Trojans slowly battled back to tie the contest 17-17. Hannibal-LaGrange and Lindenwood at Belleville traded points during the next 12 serves as the two teams found themselves tied six times before Lindenwood at Belleville took the final two points for a 25-23 win.
 
With the fourth set tied 8-8, the Trojans lost control of the contest and allowed the Lynx to use a 6-1 run to climb out to a 14-9 lead.  Hannibal-LaGrange battled back and closed the gap to three several times before a 4-0 Trojan run cut the Lynx lead down to 21-20.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange came within one point of the Lynx again, but Lindenwood at Belleville used a 3-0 run to close out the set with a 25-21 victory.
