After going 6-0 in North Central Missouri Conference action and surrendering just 14 points, it was hard for the other coaches in the NCMC to ignore the Hannibal Pirates. With the release of the 2009 All-Conference rosters, it looks like the coaches noticed the black and red.
Of the 68 players filling the spots on the first and second team All-Conference rosters, the Pirates took up 20 of the spots. Twelve different Pirates earned All-Conference with six claiming multiple honors. Kicker/punter/wide receiver/defensive back Mat Sims was the most decorated Pirate, earning honors for each of his four positions. The Pirates had six members on the first team offense and six on the second team offense. On defense, five Pirates made the first team while three made the second team.
First team offensive honors went to: running back Mark Nemes, offensive lineman Luke Myers, offensive lineman Andrew Davis, tight end Paul Trenhaile and Sims at both kicker and wide receiver. Second team offensive honors went to: quarterback Charlie Fohey, running back Lenny Clark, offensive lineman Levi Gordon, offensive lineman Chris Gregory, wide receiver Kyle Arthaud and Sims at punter.
First team defensive players are: defensive lineman Jordan Strickland, Davis on the defensive line, linebacker Ben Dunn, Nemes at defensive back and Sims at defensive back. Second team defenders are: linemen Gordon and Trenhaile, and Arthaud at defensive back.
“Our kids earned a lot of respect throughout the conference,” Hannibal head coach Mark St Clair said. “Honestly, we felt like we have had some more. ... Our kids were well-represented and we felt like it was well-deserved.”
