The Monroe City Panthers lost to South Shelby 62-46 on Friday.

Grant O’Bryan led Monroe City with 12 points and Scott Hoover scored 10 points.

Monroe City Head Coach Brock Edris said the team played well at first, but faded.

“We played really well for two quarters. It was a two point game at the end of the second quarter but with 30 seconds left to go we gave up two costly turnovers to stretch it to six,” Edris said. “And then came out in the third quarter and had a few mental lapses, gave up some layups on turnovers and it really stretched the lead.”
The coach added, “They did a really nice job on crashing the glass on offense. We just didn’t box out well enough and rebound to give ourselves a chance to get back in the game.”

The next game for Monroe City is at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Highland.

Edris said to handle Highland it will take containing certain players.

“Highland has some players that can make plays individually, we’re going to have to contain the dribble and find shooters,” Edris said. “We’ll have to work on things that we struggle with tonight, rebounding and such. It’s really important for us, we’re not a really big team. If we do the little things right, we are able to compete with most teams in conference.”
