The Hannibal-LaGrange University volleyball team dropped a match in four sets to Culver-Stockton College on Thursday at Mabee Sports Complex.

Playing the Lady Wildcats for the third time this season, HLGU came up just short with 25-20 and 27-25 losses in the first two sets. The Lady Trojans surged to a 14-5 lead in Game 2 but were unable to close it out.

HLGU continued to show fight for a narrow 25-23 win in the third game.

Serving was a major point of attack for the hosts to get back into the match, according to freshman Janine Crooks.

“We served very aggressively throughout the whole match,” said Crooks. “We were able to fight through a lot of adversity tonight.”

The Lady Wildcats (8-14) took advantage of HLGU miscues to win the fourth and final set 25-16.

Brenley Stearns led the Lady Trojans (6-23) with 11 kills overall, while Crooks posted 10. Ashlyn Spay and Ashley Hill each provided HLGU with 12 digs.

“I’ve noticed in recent games our team has had a drive to succeed even though the results don’t show that,” said Stearns. “There is always room to improve.”

Freshman Shirah Foor led the team with 20 assists in the match.

“It was great to be getting those connections,” said Foor. “We have been working really hard to get those.”

Jenna Lord led the Lady Wildcats with a career-high 18 kills and 10 digs. Gabby Hickman supplied 10 kills and 13 digs.

The Lady Trojans are scheduled to play at Principia College on Saturday.
