Lightning struck down an opportunity for the Hannibal-LaGrange University men's soccer team to secure its first win of the season Wednesday.

HLGU tied Iowa Wesleyan University 1-1 at Blackwell Field in a home match called off due to impending severe storms with 10 minutes left in regulation.

The Trojans had intensity flowing early on.

Isaac Lehmkuhl found the back of the net for the hosts to break a scoreless tie in the 27th minute. Arthur Jausons lofted a cross that Lehmkuhl headed in to take the lead.

“It’s always good to get the first goal of any game,” said HLGU coach David Erskine. “Especially when it was the first goal of the season, hopefully it will help our confidence moving forward.”

The Trojans stayed on the attack for most of the first half, backing up the visiting Tigers into their half of the field.

But the Trojans were unable to score again before the intermission.

During the second period the two squads were evenly matched as the outcome hung in the balance.

With only 22 minutes remaining, Iowa Wesleyan's Mariano Mateo broke through for the equalizing goal.

"They (Iowa Wesleyan) worked really hard,” said Erskine. “They had some pressure up top against our defense.”

Shortly after the goal, lightning and thunder filled the sky, causing the game to go into a delay.

The referees and coaches decided with suspicion of bad weather approaching to call off the remainder of the contest.

The match officially counts as a tie because it lasted at least 70 minutes.

Although the game was shortened, the Trojans gained valuable experience.

“We tried something new with the lineup. We are still trying to find the right spots for the 11 starters. I like what Arthur Jausons and Philip Kamletz did on the right side of the pitch,” said Erskine.

HLGU is still looking for the lineup that gels together to get to winning ways.

The Trojans (0-2-1) hope to find that lineup Saturday when they are scheduled to host William Penn University.
