Five Hannibal Hurricanes competed as Ozark All-Stars in the Central Zone Swimming Championships, setting 10 Hurricane team records in only 18 individual races.

Hosted by the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, this meet featured 420 of the fastest swimmers ages 9-14 in seven states. Ohio (5,191 points) won the meet with Indiana second (3,899) and Michigan third (3,709).

The Ozark team placed fifth with 2,326 points.

Nora Wiley was the top scorer among the Hurricanes, swimming to personal records to finish in the top eight in all five of her individual girls 9-10 events. She also set a personal best time in her leg of the girls 200 medley relay.

Wiley set four team records and made three USA Swimming AAAA cuts, including fifth-place finishes in the 50 backstroke (36.09) and the 100 butterfly (1:18.44) and a third in the 100 back (1:18.57) (AAAA cuts typically rank in the top 100 times nationally in that age division in a given year).

Two other Hurricanes also had great success in the girls 9-10 division.

Abby Lewton placed in the top-eight and raced to AAAA cuts in the 50 (36.11) and 100 (1:18.88) back, set a team record in the 200 freestyle (2:37.17), and scored in all six of her individual events and two relay events.

Olivia Johnson placed in the top-eight and swam team records in both the 200 individual medley (2:53.08) and 100 breaststroke (1:32.42); in the latter event, she also recorded a team record for the 50 breast, taking the race out in a sizzling 43.79.

Wiley, Johnson and Lewton combined for the first three legs of the sixth-place girls 9-10 200 medley relay.

In the girls 11-12 division, Maddy Johnson set team records in the 200 (2:22.66) and 1,500 (19:51.30) free, the latter fast enough for 10th place. Audrey Noland raced to a 28.86 in the girls 13-14 50 free, missing her own team record by 0.02 seconds.

The competitive swim team of the YMCA of Hannibal, the Hurricanes offer a structured, professionally coached youth athletic program designed to develop the skills, capacity and self-confidence for a lifetime of safety and enjoyment around the water as well as for achievement at every level of ability and ambition.
