A pair of Marion County track and field athletes kept their seasons alive to qualify for the Class 1 sectional meet.

Sadie Spratt won the triple jump at 32 feet and also advanced in the 100 hurdles by taking fourth in 17.78 at the Class 1 District 2 championships over the weekend in La Plata.

The junior will be making her third trip to sectionals and looks to punch her first ticket to the state meet.

“Athletes really struggled with the triple jump at districts,” Marion County coach Margaret Keilholz said. “Sadie was the only jumper to get to 32. Her PR is 33-10.75. She has a really good shot to place in the top four at sectionals.

“On her hurdles, her prelim time was faster than her finals at districts. She is working with a hurdle coach to get her three-stepping down and has a really good shot to advance to state this weekend if she can run under 17 seconds.”

Matthew Wellman ran a personal record time of 12:23.44 in the 3,200 meters to earn fourth at districts.

The Mustangs junior will make his first sectional appearance Saturday at Oakville High School in St. Louis.

“Matthew did not run the 3,200 for a month before districts,” Keilholz said. “We saw it was his best shot to advance to sectionals, and being the tough kid he is, he wanted to try it. He has been training hard this week and has hopes to achieve a PR this weekend at sectionals.”
