The Marion County baseball team couldn't climb out of an early hole Thursday night in an 8-4 home loss to Madison.

Madison struck for four runs in the top of the first and never surrendered the lead.

Jimmy Layton went the distance on the mound for the Panthers.

The standout pitched a complete game three-hitter and finished with 17 strikeouts. 

Sheldon Whetstone pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Mustangs (0-2), striking out 11 while allowing nine hits and eight earned runs. 

Whetstone provided all four of Marion County's RBIs with a home run and bases-clearing double.
