The Palmyra baseball team put the tying run on base in the seventh inning Thursday night but couldn't punch it home in a 9-8 loss to Quincy.

After trailing 9-4, Palmyra erupted for a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to pull to within one.

Caden Power drove home the first run of the rally with a single. Corder Lehenbauer then drew a bases-loaded walk before consecutive fielder's choice plays brought home two more Panthers.

Nolan Wosman capped his scoreless relief outing with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to give Palmyra (3-1) a chance for its fourth win of the season.

Jacob Kroeger worked a 10-pitch plate appearance into a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh but advanced no further.

The Blue Devils induced a strikeout and groundout to cap the contest.

Peyton Plunkett roped an RBI double to center to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the first.

Kroeger singled home Noah Mencer in the second to grow the lead to 3-0.

But Dax Flowerree hit a two-run double in the top of the third to put Quincy on the board.

After Power drove home Wosman with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, Quincy countered with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth aided by a fielding error.

Quincy plated three more runs in the sixth via a bases-loaded walk, error and passed ball.

Trevor Wiemelt started for Quincy and allowed three runs on five hits over three innings. Jayden Rice tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win, while Corbin Frye recorded the save.

Hayden Hoerr allowed just two runs over four innings while striking out seven. He didn't factor into the decision. Plunkett, who was tagged for four earned runs (six total) over 1 1/3 innings, was charged with the loss.

Wosman led Palmyra offensively by going 3-for-5 with two runs.

Plunkett went 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs, while Power racked up a pair of hits in the loss.

The non-conference matchup was played at QU Stadium but was officially a home game for Palmyra.
