The Hannibal boys tennis team was shut out in singles Thursday during a 9-3 loss at Boonville in a North Central Missouri Conference match.

The Hannibal boys tennis team was shut out in singles Thursday afternoon during a 9-3 loss at Boonville in a North Central Missouri Conference match.

Hannibal picked up its lone victories in doubles play.

Kyle Murphy and Tristen Terrill claimed the most competitive matchup of the day with an 11-9 win at No. 5 doubles.

Nathan DeStefane and Nick Tompkins earned a 10-5 victory at No. 4 doubles, while David Hjelm and Caleb Newlon were 10-6 victors at No. 6.

Austin Brown, Hannibal's top player, fell 10-1 in singles before the rest of the varsity lineup followed suit in the loss column.

Brown and No. 2 Ethan Bross each lost their singles matches 10-1. Collin Poage lost 10-2 at No. 3. Luke Boyd (No. 4) and Trent Kempker (No. 5) fell by scores of 10-5, while DeStefane (No. 6) lost 10-6.

“Boonville was pretty strong,” Hannibal coach Bob Catalpa said. “They returned three of the top six from last year and added a student from Italy who played No. 1.” 

In junior varsity action, Mason Jones and Chris Lewis teamed up for a 10-1 doubles win for Hannibal.

Hannibal is scheduled to host Kirksville on Monday.
