Nine Hannibal wrestlers went undefeated Wednesday night as the Pirates posted three team victories during a quadrangular meet at Warrenton.

Just nine days before it will host the Class 3 District 2 Tournament, Hannibal took care of three district opponents, beating Warrenton 50-24, Westminster 72-0 and Fort Zumwalt East 54-24.

“We are pretty much at the end of our season and most of our kids have really improved in the areas we have been working on,” Hannibal coach Derek Greening said. “We definitely got a little bit of a mental edge over our district opponents, and that is very important heading into districts.”

Jameson White set the tone for the Pirates by avenging a previous loss this season to Westminster's Patrick Andrews with a third-period pin in 5 minutes, 29 seconds at 195 pounds. White also earned a 12-8 decision over Warrenton's Brady Weir and a pin against Zumwalt East's Joe Boyle in 1 minute, 22 seconds.

Hannibal recorded eight wins by pin against Westminster and won the remainder of the weight classes in the dual via forfeits. Bailie Rethorn (120), Tyler Leonard (126), Tyler Wilson (132), Gavin Morawitz (138), Vernell Hawkins (160) and Sean Carroll (182) all notched pins in the second period. Austin Carroll (170) needed just 1 minute, 40 seconds to pin Matthew Thoenen of the Wildcats for the fastest result.

“We wrestled Westminster just a couple of weeks ago and turned a couple of the close matches into pins and one of our losses into a win so obviously that is very important,” Greening said.

Morawitz dominated Warrenton's Stephen LaMotte for a 17-0 technical fall as the Pirates won six of nine contested matches against the Warriors. Kaleb Greening (145) and Chase Kirby (220) registered pins, while Austin and Sean Carroll won by decisions of 6-0 and 3-1, respectively.

Hannibal beat Zumwalt East on the strength of six forfeits and three contested victories. Leonard, ranked sixth in Class 3 at 126, controlled a 13-2 major decision against Shakhboz Hasano before Greening topped Sean Wachter 16-1 by technical fall.

White was the only unbeaten Pirate who won three contested matchups. The other eight all were aided by at least one forfeit, including Lyndon Otten, who picked up each of his wins via forfeits at 113 pounds. Rethorn, Leonard, Morawitz, Greening, Austin Carroll, Sean Carroll and Kirby rounded out the 3-0 grapplers.

Hawkins and Wilson each went 2-1 for the Pirates.

Mason Hudson earned a pair of pins for Hannibal in junior varsity action, while Darrell Taylor also won a match by pin fall.

Hannibal returns to the mats Saturday for a tournament at University City.
