The Hannibal boys basketball team defeated Fort Zumwalt North 66-60 in the consolation championship of the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament.
The Hannibal boys basketball team overcame a sluggish start Saturday to defeat Fort Zumwalt North 66-60 in the consolation championship of the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament.
After managing just three points in the first quarter to fall behind 12-3, Hannibal erupted for 18 points or more in each of the final three periods to improve to 10-8 on the season.
The key to the Pirates turnaround was applying pressure on the host Panthers.
“We really struggled to score against Fort Zumwalt North's zone in the first quarter,” Hannibal head coach Marty Hull said. “In the second quarter, we started picking up full court and we zone-pressed on free throws. We were able to get the tempo more in our favor by pressing.”
Dezi Jones led Hannibal with a game-high 34 points, including 14 in the pivotal second quarter. The junior playmaker breathed life into the offense after a three by Preston Bennett provided the Pirates' only points in the first period.
Jones was named to the all-tournament team for averaging 31 points in three games.
“Dezi showed a lot of patience in the game,” Hull said. “Against the zone, he could have forced up some 3-point shots, thus he did not score in the first quarter. Once we got the game up-tempo, he started to find more shots.”
Hannibal and Fort Zumwalt North entered halftime tied at 21.
Adreke Brumbaugh scored all six of his points in the third quarter to help Hannibal build a 44-37 edge entering the fourth. Wyatt Waelder also added a pair of buckets in the third.
Bennett knocked down his third 3-pointer of the game in the fourth, while Danny Colborn got in on the scoring with four points in the final period.
Hannibal made six of seven free throws in the fourth to close out the win.
“We talked at the beginning of the year that if we were to go 2-1 in any of the three tournaments that we are in, we had a great tournament,” Hull said. “We also got one of our team goals of getting to 10 wins this year.”
Marco Powells paced the Panthers with 26 points in the losing effort.
