The Palmyra girls basketball team couldn't shut the door on Knox County Monday night in a 72-65 triple-overtime loss.

The Palmyra girls basketball team couldn’t shut the door on Knox County Monday night in the opening round of the Highland Tournament.

The Lady Eagles scored in the final seconds of regulation, first overtime and the second overtime before outlasting the Panthers, 72-65, in triple overtime.

After a 3-pointer from Megan Stone gave Palmyra a 54-51 lead, Savannah Mauck knocked down the equalizer with four seconds left on the clock to force the first extra session.

In the first overtime, Sidney Miller split a pair of free throws to once again tie the Lady Panthers.

Alyssa Peavler then crushed the Panthers with an old-fashioned 3-point play at the end of the second overtime.

Palmyra ran out of gas in the final four-minute session.

Robby Meyers paced the Lady Panthers with 18 points, while Stone (16) and Raegan Barnett (13) combined for 29 in the loss.

Knox County attempted 45 free throws compared to just 10 for Palmyra. The Lady Eagles connected on 22 of their shots from the charity stripe.

“We just gave up too many easy buckets, and letting them shoot 45 free throws made a big difference in the game,” Barnett said. “Our offense just wasn’t clicking and we couldn’t execute when we needed to. Then in the third overtime a lot of us were in foul trouble, we ran out of gas and just couldn’t finish the job.”

The No. 3 seed Lady Panthers (5-5) return to the court Wednesday against Kirksville — a 65-44 loser to No. 2 seed Highland Monday night.

Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
