Kaylee Falconer scored 16 points in the second half to lead the Hannibal girls basketball team to 60-55 upset over Christian on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Winfield Tournament.

The No. 5 seed Lady Pirates (2-1) surged to a 9-point halftime lead over the top-seeded Lady Eagles and never looked back for their second consecutive win.

Hannibal advances to face 3-seed Lift for Life in the championship at 8 p.m. on Friday.

“We felt like we really controlled the game,” Hannibal coach Ben Jamerson said. “We came in with a game plan and the girls worked it nearly to perfection. Our scoring input was a little top-heavy but we had contributions from everybody that got significant playing time.”

Two days after shooting just 18 percent from the floor in a 33-28 win over Trinity Catholic, Hannibal came out firing.

Emma Deien delivered a 3-pointer as the first installment of her 17-point effort, while Abby Baumann recorded a pair of buckets to help the Lady Pirates take a 15-8 lead through the first quarter.

Hannibal freshman Taylor Simms netted all four of her points in the second quarter to go ahead 29-20 at the halftime break.

“These girls had a really ugly win on Monday, and tonight was about as far to the other end of the spectrum you could possibly get,” Jamerson said. “It was just a completely different team and really the team I hope shows up on Friday because I think we have a really good chance to close this thing out.”

Senior guard Kourtney Markham and senior forward Abby King combined for 16 of Christian's points in the first half in an offense that failed to gain traction otherwise.

“Our defense switched things up here and there, and ultimately our pressure, energy and intensity on the defensive end is what really got things going for us," Jamerson said.

Christian freshman Gracie Stugart delivered a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter to cut into the Lady Eagles deficit, but Falconer scored 10 in the period to keep the Lady Pirates in control.

Falconer finished with a game-high 20 points.

Autumn Bigsby, who posted eight points, scored a pair of buckets for Hannibal in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.
