The Hannibal Hurricanes swam to a bevy of personal records at the Springfield Season Opener Invitational.
The Hannibal Hurricanes took 24 swimmers to the Springfield (Ill.) YMCA for the Season Opener Invitational Oct. 6-8. The meet featured 420 athletes from 12 teams around Missouri and Illinois.
As a team, the Hurricanes raced to 56 percent personal records, comparing favorably to the 26 percent team mark achieved in a dual meet with Springfield only two weeks earlier.
Earning Hurricane Swimmer of the Meet honors was 12-year-old Ainsley Bennett, who, in twelve races, recorded 11 wins, 10 PRs, nine USA Swimming AAA times and seven team records. Chopping four seconds off her 100 breast (1:16.97) and 100 fly (1:04.65) times, Bennett won the IMX award for best overall swimmer in her age group.
Other Hurricanes taking home their respective division’s IMX awards were 11-year-old Maddy Johnson and 9-year-old Abby Lewton.

The Hurricanes compete next at a home triangular meet Saturday at the Hannibal YMCA pool with Twin Pikes YMCA and Mexico YMCA. Competition starts at 11:30 a.m. and will run until approximately 3:30 p.m. There is no admission charge, and spectators are welcome.
