Three Hannibal softball standouts were selected to the 2017 North Central Missouri All-Conference team.
Senior shortstop Olivia Pfeifer, who made the list for the fourth time, joins junior second baseman Josie Zeiger and senior pitcher Desarae Garcia as the Lady Pirates' honorees.
Hannibal (14-10, 8-4 NCMC) tied for second place in the conference standings with Fulton. Mexico went undefeated within league play en route to the title.
Hannibal hosts Fulton at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the semifinals of the Class 3 District 8 Tournament at Veterans Sports Complex.
Below is a breakdown of Hannibal's all-NCMC selections:
Olivia Pfeifer • Senior • Shortstop
The numbers: .518 average (.674 in NCMC), 5 doubles, 7 triples, 20 RBIs, 43 runs, 37 steals, .940 fielding percentage
The standout moment: 4-for-4 with 3 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases to come a home run short of the cycle Sept. 27 during a 15-0 win over Kirksville
The analysis: “First and foremost, if you look at her other three seasons, she may have one, two or three doubles," Hannibal coach Kendra Murphy said. “Her power is the biggest change — her confidence standing in the box and not being afraid. She has found her stride. She has been a huge contender for RBIs. And she's been able every year to reduce the number of errors at shortstop. She's not a natural shortstop, but her ability to mature and grow into that position, you would have never known that wasn't her first spot.”
Josie Zeiger • Junior • Second baseman
The numbers: .375 average (.333 in NCMC), 2 home runs, 30 RBIs, 22 runs, .938 fielding percentage
The standout moment: Game-tying RBI triple and walk-off run on wild pitch to beat Highland 7-6 on Sept. 12 — the catalyst for a 6-game winning streak
The analysis: “We talked to her at the end of last year because she jumped around the order,” Murphy said. “We had the No. 3 spot open that needed to be filled. I told her, 'I think you are a great candidate for the 3 spot. You have the potential to have the power that we need.' She has stepped up and owned it from Game 1. A lot like Pfeifer, she has come through in key, big situations and just delivered time after time with that double or that triple or even that single that score runs. Her RBIs are definitely showing it.”
Desarae Garcia • Senior • Pitcher
The numbers: 9-9 record with 4.45 ERA (6-3, 3.85 in NCMC), 93 strikeouts, 33 1-2-3 innings, .289 batting average offensively
The standout moment: pitched 10 innings, struck out seven and helped herself with three hits in a complete-game 11-8 victory over Rock Bridge on Sept. 28
The analysis: “She's been throwing really well here of late,” Murphy said. “The first part of the season was a little frustrating, but we've been getting back to everything firing on all cylinders. She still pitched well enough to get nine wins. She still pitched well enough to keep us in a lot of ball games. She's one that the longer she throws in a game, she tends to get better. It's just a matter of getting her to come out and start as good as she is in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.”
