Emmy Griesbaum and Kendra Maples made sure their season would extend at least another week with a state sectional win on Tuesday.
Emmy Griesbaum and Kendra Maples have not been shy about wanting their tennis season to continue.
The Palmyra tandem made sure their season would extend at least another week with a state sectional win on Tuesday.
Griesbaum and Maples defeated Kaylie Meyer and Abigail Worster of St. Dominic, 6-3, 6-0 to advance to their second straight state championships appearance.
With the win the pair improved to 17-1 on the season.
Things did not look good for the Lady Panthers duo early on. The two dropped the first two games. They rallied to win the next three games for a 3-2 lead. After dropping the next game, they would not lose another game in the win.
“It took them a little while to get going,” Palmyra coach Jessica Gottman said. “They were a little nervous at the beginning. You could tell they felt the pressure of returning back to state.”
For Griesbaum the state doubles tournament will be the last time she steps on the court.
“Us making it to state again is exactly how I wanted to end my high school tennis journey,” the senior said. “It’s a great feeling to get to play with my best friend and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Although I am sad it will have to end, I am proud of what we have accomplished together over the past two years.”
The duo have a sparkling 31-4 record over the past two years.
One other Palmyra player did not have the same fortune as the doubles team.
Amy Bryan had her individual season come to an end with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to St. Dominic’s Abbigail West.
Bryan, who made her varsity debut this season, ended her season with an impressive 17-4 mark.
“Amy had an amazing season,” Gottman said of her No. 5 singles player. “Her record speaks volumes for her first year on varsity. I am very proud of her accomplishments this year and look forward to two more years with her.”
All three players will return to the court with the rest of their Lady Panther teammates on Saturday for the team state sectional tournament. The tournament will be played at Hannibal.
