The visiting Lady Bruins earned a 25-19, 25-23 sweep of the Lady Pirates at Korf Gymnasium.
The Hannibal volleyball team was on the verge of forcing a third set Thursday when Rock Bridge turned it up a notch.
The visiting Lady Bruins broke a tie to score the final two points of a 25-19, 25-23 sweep of the Lady Pirates at Korf Gymnasium.
“We got to 23-23 and we started tipping the ball over, and they took risks, made some swings, got big kills and reaped the rewards of what they did,” Hannibal coach Kelsey Whitley said.
Hannibal (10-7) trailed throughout the first set but started to mount a comeback thanks in part to Kyler Rademan, who finished the night with 14 set assists and three digs.
The hosts couldn't quite close the gap in Game 1, digging a hole they ultimately couldn't climb out of.
“We were able to get some points and go on a little bit of a run, but we came up short,” Whitley said.
The second game went back-and-forth before Rock Bridge earned the points that mattered most.
The Lady Pirates missed eight serves on the night.
Kaylee Falconer led Hannibal with 10 digs, while Maddie Janes contributed five kills and six digs. Claire Thomas provided four kills and a pair of blocks.
Whitley mentioned she was disappointed in how her team responded once faced with adversity.
“We've got to fight for every point, and we've got to have grit,” she said. “Rock Bridge had it. They fought for every point. They got excited about what they did. They blocked us and cheered about it. We did not respond well.”
Hannibal, which has lost four of its past six matches, hosts Marshall on Saturday.
“We're 0-2 so far this week,” Whitley said. “That's something our girls really struggle with because they're not used to being a part of lots of losses. They are a little defeated but they've got to rise above it. They have the tools in the tool box, but they have to open it and use them.”
