The Hannibal girls tennis team closed the gap against North Central Missouri Conference rival Moberly on Thursday night but still fell 7-5 on the road.

The Lady Pirates won three doubles matches and pulled out a pair of singles victories to put pressure on the home team.

"We were very close and last time we played them it was 10-2," said Hannibal coach Bob Catalpa, referring to an Aug. 31 loss. "Definite improvement." 

Ashlyn Nichols, Hannibal's No. 1 player, won her singles match 10-3. Emilee Carleton also won at No. 5 by a score of 10-6.

Nichols and Blair Burton won 10-7 on the No. 1 doubles court, while Kelsey Perrigo and Jaspreet Kaur won 11-9 at No. 4. Molly Broughton and Elizabeth Brummell won the No. 5 match 10-7.

Up next for Hannibal (2-10, 1-6) is its senior night match against Quincy on Tuesday before the NCMC tournament Wednesday.
