Blair Burton surged to a lead in her No. 3 singles match Thursday and did all she could not to give it back.

The Hannibal sophomore pulled out an 11-9 victory to give the Lady Pirates their only singles point of the night during a 10-2 home team loss to Moberly.

“Just got to get to the next ball, the next point, the next game,” Burton said of her mindset. “I was leading, but (my opponent) was really good at the net and just ran and got to the balls.”

Burton also teamed up with senior Ashlyn Nichols for a tight 10-8 win in No. 1 doubles.

The second-year player's performance impressed coach Bob Catalpa.

“Blair didn't have too many unforced errors and kept the ball moving around well,” Catalpa said. “She's been really working on anticipating, coming up for short balls and being ready. She did a good job with that.”

Aside from Burton's efforts to earn two points, Hannibal was shut out. Nichols lost No. 1 singles 5-10, and Andrea Martin fell at No. 2 3-10. Liz Stilley fell in the battle of No. 4s 1-10, while Kylee Johnson lost 5-10 at No. 5 and Kelsey Perrigo went down 2-10 at No. 6.

Martin and Emilee Carleton fell 5-10 in No. 2 doubles, as did Elizabeth Brummell and Molly Broughton at No. 5. Stilley and Johnson lost No. 3 doubles 3-10, the same score Jaspreet Kaur and Yudsara Corredor lost in the No. 6 competition.

Perrigo and Shelby Pritchett had the strongest losing effort for Hannibal, falling 7-10 on the No. 4 doubles court.

Hannibal travels to play Fulton on Friday.
