Abby Baumann and Maddie Janes helped the Hannibal volleyball team turn defense into offense Saturday afternoon during a 25-13, 25-12 victory over Marshall in its season-opening match.

The outside hitters teamed up for 12 kills as they starred in the front row, though it's what they provide defensively in the back row that coach Kelsey Whitley views as more significant.

The pair combined to pick up 26 digs to stifle the Lady Owls' attack.

“Outsides hate to play defense because they want to hit, but those girls have really bought into our program in terms of you must pass before you can hit,” Whitley said. “They've done a phenomenal job playing good defense and picking up good balls but also getting themselves in a position where they are able to hit.”

Senior middle blocker Shelby Nelson played a solid game all-around, tying teammates Kyler Rademan and Baumann with a team-high seven kills. Nelson also recorded two aces and had eight digs.

Kaylee Falconer and Rademan took turns running the offense at the setter position. Falconer totaled 15 set assists, while Rademan dished out nine.

“We did a good job not taking (Marshall) lightly and coming out strong, which is something that we struggled with a lot last year,” Whitley added.

FRESHMEN MAKE STRONG DEBUT

The Hannibal freshman team picked up a win over Marshall on Saturday in two sets, 25-13, 25-8. Ellie Locke led with five kills. Koren Lewton contributed four digs and eight aces, while Baylee Zeiger recorded five set assists.

“Our freshmen were obviously a little bit nervous going into their first high school match,” Whitley said. “The first game wasn't as good as the second game, but after they started working those kinks out it really played out in our favor.”

FRICK LEADS JV TO WIN

Junior Payton Frick recorded 23 set assists to lift the Hannibal junior varsity to a 25-23, 25-12 win over Marshall on Saturday.

“Payton is going to get some varsity playing time as a hitter also,” Whitley said. “She set last year for us at JV and has really done a nice job. She's really willing to fill any role that we need her, making her one of those utility players, and that's only going to get her more playing time.”

Emma Deien led the JV squad with nine kills. Peyton Utterback recorded six kills and five aces, while Hannah Miller finished with four kills, four aces and two digs.
