The American Legion Post 55 A team kicked off its season with a pair of wins and one loss at the St. Charles Tournament.

On Friday night, Kole Dieterich of Palmyra pitched a complete game two-hitter to lead the Hannibal squad to a narrow 1-0 victory over Ballwin.

Hannibal's only tally came in the second inning thanks to an offensive tandem from Palmyra. Garrett Stone doubled, and Jerry Cunningham singled to bring him home.

On Saturday morning, Hannibal let a three-run lead slip out of its grasp during what ultimately turned into a 5-3 loss to Kirkwood.

Post 55 scored three runs over the first two innings to take control of the contest early on.

In the first inning, Chase Kirby of Hannibal reached on a base hit before courtesy runner Caleb Peters of Mark Twain came around to score on a passed ball.

An inning later, Stone and Kaden Malone of Palmyra each got on base and scored to put Hannibal ahead 3-0.

But Kirkwood roared back to plate two runs in the third and one in the fourth before taking the lead with a two-run fifth-inning rally.

"We were up 3-0 going into the third inning and then we gave up some hits and had four errors and ended up giving up some runs and they went ahead," Hannibal coach Brian Stone said.

Hannibal won its final game of the tournament 13-4 over Elsberry on Saturday afternoon. The victory was shortened by rain to 3 ½ innings.

Braden Shannon of Canton led Hannibal with three runs scored during the contest. Malone, Spencer Locke, Charlie Hirner and Ross Arch each scored twice.

Logan Astorino and Kirby pitched and kept the Elsberry bats at bay.

Despite its 2-1 weekend record, Hannibal failed to advance to Monday's championship round due to a head-to-head tiebreaker against Kirkwood.

Hannibal Post 55 A faces St. Charles at noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday for a road doubleheader.
