The Marion County baseball team ran into a buzz saw Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Class 1 District 12 tournament.

Wellsville hurler Ben Burton struck out 12 Mustangs in 5-inning 19-0 romp.

"Wellsville's starter did a great job on the mound," Marion County skipper Jason Keilholz said. "We really struggled at the plate but he was probably the best pitcher we have faced this season."

Wellsville broke up a 4-0 game with six runs in the third inning before erupting for nine more in the home half of the fourth.

The victors pounded out 15 hits in the game.

Ty Bowdish suffered the loss on the hill for the Mustangs.

"I thought Ty did a good job of throwing strikes today," the Mustangs coach said. "But give Wellsville credit, they did a better job of putting the ball in play and making things happen with runners on base."

After finishing last season 15-5, the young Marion County team — which played with just nine players all season — only played six games, with one win.

"I think the weather really hurt our consistency this year," Keilholz said. "But overall I was pleased with our progress and couldn't have asked for a better group of kids to coach."
