The Monroe City boys led the pack at the Class 2 District 2 meet, while the Monroe City and Mark Twain girls each registered top 3 finishes.

Brayden Osborn had a look of dejection on his face after a sixth place finish in the javelin during the Class 2 District 2 track and field championships Saturday afternoon at Lankford Field.

It didn’t take long for Monroe City boys coach David Kirby to find Osborn and offer him some words of advice.

It took even less for Osborn to crack a smile and even a little laugh.

Osborn’s somber mood changed because Kirby explained his points helped contribute to the Panthers winning the district championship for the fifth consecutive year.

Monroe City tallied 160.5 points to outdistance Cleveland NJROTC by 24.5 points.

“This feels good because all of these guys have worked their tails off all year long,” Kirby said. “We had kids coming out of nowhere today to score a point here, three points there, like Brayden (Osborn) did in the javelin and it took all of the team to win this today. I am just extremely proud of what all those guys did today.”

Mark Twain finished eighth place in the field of 12 with 40 points.

Clark County captured the girls team title with 182 points, while Monroe City (139) and Mark Twain (91) finished second and third, respectively.

In one of the more exciting events of the day, Mark Twain’s Devin Neff picked up a first place for the Tigers in the boys 1,600 meters.

Through the first 1,500 meters, Neff ran stride-for-stride with Monroe City’s Nathan Mehrer and Clark County’s Nathan Frazee. In the final 100 meters, Neff broke away to win by 10 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 53.79 seconds — two seconds ahead of Frazee. Mehrer, who is battling an upper respiratory illness, finished third with a time of 4:58.3.

Neff mentioned he was just trying to feed off the other runners energy throughout the race and then make his move.

“Not to be cocky or anything but I just used their energy to motivate me,” the junior said. “And I just did what my dad always tells me to do and that is just to run my race and I just happened to finish with a better kick.”

The trio meet up again later in the meet during the 3,200. Neff and Frazee broke away from the back halfway through the race before Frazee opened up a lead in the final 800 meters. In the end, Neff couldn’t catch the Clark County freshman and settled with a second place finish. Mehrer finished fourth.

Neff mentioned he heads into the sectional next week pleased with his performances on Saturday.

“Time-wise I finished the mile right where I wanted to be,” he said. “And in the two-mile, I think could have ran better, but I still have some time to improve on that.”

Monroe City’s Elijah Minter picked up a pair of first place finishes and a second. The Panther senior won the discus (162-4) and shot put (49-1) before a second place finish in the javelin (129-0). In his final heave in the finals of the discus, Minter’s winning mark also set a personal record by 112 feet.

“I felt like I had been peaking all day and on that last one I just sped up my spin just a little bit and it felt good coming out of my hand,” Minter said of his final discus toss. “And it went out there pretty good. It just felt amazing.”

Parker Yager and Logan Maher finished first and second for the Panthers in the pole vault, respectively. Yager’s winning vault went for 11-6.

Jordan Bichsel won the long jump with a leap of 21-10 ¼, while he also helped the 1,600 relay team to a first place finish. Zach Osborn, Clifford Talton and Blake Hays rounded out the quartet, who crossed the finish line in 3:34.39.

Mark Twain’s Dalton Hill finished third in the shot put with a toss of 41-10 ¾ and second in the discus (135-3).

On the girls side, Monroe City’s Halli Karr and Mark Twain’s McKenzie Lathrom were both double winners.

Karr set personal best times in winning the 100 hurdles (17.27) and 300 hurdles (52.22). The Lady Panthers senior bested freshman teammate Elizabeth Montgomery by just over a second in the 100 hurdles.

Lathrom won both the long jump (16-5 ¾) and triple jump (34-0).

“I have been working hard in practice to get these wins today so it feels really good,” Lathrom said. “I think I came in seeded first in both events, so I just wanted to come out and jump close to those marks and it worked out good today.”

Teammate Madalyn Ford won the 1,600 with a time of 5:51.6 for the Lady Tigers only other first place finish.

Monroe City freshman Bailey Hays, who placed third in the mile race, earned a blue ribbon by cruising to victory in the 3,200. Hays won by 150 meters and crossed the finish line in a time of 12:50.9.

Lila Yager and McKenzie West earned the final two first place finishes on the day for the Lady Panthers.

Yager won the pole vault as she cleared 8-0, while West came away victorious in the javelin with a throw of 116-0.

“I was a little worried before the finals because in the prelims I did not throw my best for sure,” West admitted. “I really wanted to reach 125 feet today, but I am happy with winning today.”

The top four finishers in each of the 19 individual events advance to the Class 2 sectional next week.
