The Hannibal baseball team broke a three-game losing streak Friday with a 9-5 victory over St. Charles at the Palmyra Baseball Slam at Flower City Park.

Hannibal (7-5) raced to five runs in the first inning. Scot Roberts singled home leadoff man Chandler Moffitt for the first score of the game before Colton Brown drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to put the Pirates ahead 2-0.

After Will Whitaker scored on a wild pitch, Wyatt Waelder capped the rally with a single to center that brought home Noah Zahn and Brown.

With a big lead already in tact, Brown started on the mound for Hannibal and tossed five innings while allowing just a pair of third-inning runs, neither of which were earned.

Hannibal remained ahead 5-2 until the Pirates offense attacked again in the sixth.

Waelder came home on a passed ball to score the team’s sixth run, and Whitaker smoked a line drive to center that scored Rickey to make it 7-2.

While St. Charles clawed back with one run in the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh, it never mounted a serious comeback.

Payton Phillips and Moffitt each collected RBIs in the top of the seventh to provide insurance for Hannibal.

Lawson Rickey led the Pirates with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, while Whitaker and Waelder collected two hits a piece.

Whitaker and Zahn pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to close the contest.

Hannibal faces Palmyra and Jefferson on Saturday in the second day of the tournament.
