Back for its sixth year, the Chase Anderson MDA Rodeo is set for this Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22, at Rockin A Arena at 5303 Highway C near Palmyra.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. each night. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the local Muscular Dystrophy Association chapter in memory of Chase Anderson.

Tickets to the event can be purchased at the gate for $15. Kids eight and under are free.

“We're just thankful for the community and the volunteers and the support of the whole area,” organizer Joel Anderson said. “We hope to have as big a crowd as we can have. We try to ultimately remember that it's a dual cause — the entertainment and the benefit.”

The rodeo has raised $125,000 during its first five years. The money is donated to help pay for services such as clinic visits, flu shots, wheelchair help and summer camps for children who fall under the umbrella of MDA programs.

“Palmyra and Hannibal and Quincy, Monroe City and all those folks that come to the rodeo help benefit those families who have a child affected by one of the 40 diseases in the group that MDA helps,” Anderson explained.

The rodeo, held in an indoor arena with a full concessions area and public seating on 14 acres, expects to attract as many as 1,200 people to its Saturday show. A slightly smaller crowd is expected Friday.

Competitions at the rodeo will include steer wrestling, saddle Bronc riding, calf and team roping, barrel racing, bull riding and more. Outlaw Rodeo Productions of Columbia, Mo., is the contractor for the event.

Additionally, there is a roundup rodeo scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday geared toward people with special needs. The program will include horseback riding, line dancing, face painting and a petting area.

Families are encouraged to arrive by 9:30 a.m. to leave time to registration. Inquiries about the roundup rodeo can be directed to Chloe Lovelace at 573-406-3124.
