Jordan Bichsel tried to do it all for Monroe City during a 3-1 loss to Highland in the first round of the Clarence Cannon Conference tournament Friday night.

The senior drew a walk to open the contest. Shortly after, he took second base on a passed ball. He then stole third and eventually crossed home plate thanks to an RBI groundout by teammate Josh Underhill.

The tally gave Monroe City (0-1) a 1-0 cushion early in its season opener. Unfortunately for the Panthers, it went downhill from there.

Highland (1-0) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the opening frame to take a 2-1 lead. The scores, both of which came with two outs, gave the Cougars an advantage they never gave back.

Highland's Chad Smith struck out 10 Monroe City batters during his five innings of work. He allowed one run on one hit to earn the win.

Bichsel, who started the game on the mound and pitched 5 1/3 innings, was pegged with the loss for the Panthers. He surrendered all three runs, striking out nine while walking four.

Monroe City only mustered two hits during the contest. Josh Crook connected for a single in the fourth, while Lance Williams reached on a base hit in the seventh.
