Artist and educator, Carol Burns will conduct a variety of workshops to show aspiring artists how to mix up material to create vibrant and innovative artwork. These workshops will take place on Wednesdays in June at Rooster’s Crow Art Center.
Burns, who has 29 years of teaching experience at various levels, holds a bachelor of science in art education from Northeast Missouri State University and an master of art from California State University. Drawing, painting, fibers and design classes are among the classes she has taught. In addition to conducting workshops at Rooster’s Crow Art Center, she teaches at Hannibal-LaGrange College in Hannibal and John Wood Community College in Quincy.
From 9 a.m. until noon June 4, Burns will conduct a Silk Paint Workshop. This workshop will explore the art of painting on silk. The cost of the workshop is $60 and includes supplies. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Burns will instruct a workshop on how to make handmade paper. The handmade paper workshop is a two-session course that will continue from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 18. The cost of this workshop is $50 and includes the two sessions and supplies.
The Art of Batik workshop will take place from 9 a.m. until noon June 18. Batik (pronounced ‘Bah-Teak’) is a method of dying fabric using wax to create a pattern. This workshop includes supplies for a fee of $60.
From 9 a.m. until noon June 25, Burns will demonstrate how to create a canvas collage for $30 plus the cost of supplies.
As an art educator, Burns feels that students need to experience a variety of media. She encourages students to explore new techniques and push the medium beyond what one might expect. Although she feels strong drawing skills are the basis for most painting styles, the lack of such should not keep one from painting, as there are many areas of design to explore. Her passion is watercolor but she enjoys exploring and combining other media.
For more information or to reserve a seat in any of these workshops, contact Rooster’s Crow Art Center at (573) 406-1444 or e-mail at roosterscrow@sbcglobal.net and insert the class choice in the subject line. Submitted by Carla Chlebanowski
