Veterans Elementary School students recently had their first character education assembly for the 2009-10 school year that highlighted RESPECT. The assembly began with all the students singing the song “Respect” by Dr. Stevens. Then W. T. Johnson, assistant principal and counselor of the school, gave a talk about respect which was followed by a skit called “Character Counts” presented by the fifth grade drama club. The students who had perfect attendance for the first quarter of school and students who scored proficient and advanced on last year’s MAP tests were recognized. At the end of the assembly the Student Council officer candidates were introduced with the candidates giving short campaign speeches.
