Talking about the weather used to be a ‘safe subject.’ Lately, it’s become a touchy one, pivoting on the issue of climate change, or ‘global warming,’ with some folks donning rose-colored glasses of denial and others tolling the doom bell of helplessness.
The main factor in the issue of catastrophic climate change is carbon dioxide (CO2), commonly called the ‘greenhouse gas.’ The level of CO2 in our atmosphere has risen markedly in the last 20 years, and if we don’t something to curb our contribution to that, right now, we may very well lose the opportunity to do anything about it at all.
The truth is, we don’t know for certain if we have passed the point of no-return, but we do have clear evidence that we’ve already at least contributed to changes that have drastic global effects, like: melting of vast sections of polar ice; increased frequency and intensity of storm systems; rising sea levels; weather patterns far outside the norm. We must start right now to lessen our impact, before it really is too late.
This is not a case of ‘wait and see,’ This is a case of ‘act now or risk making our children pay a horrible price.’ Please. Act now! Call upon your senators and representatives to increase their focus on reducing the level of CO2 in our atmosphere.
