As the river swells around us, it would be easy to become lost in a sea of despair. Those who already have chronic mental or physical conditions may find that the constant barrage of flood-related bulletins can add to an already heavy burden.
We’re here to remind everyone affected by the current weather-related scenario to look toward the rainbow that follows the storm.
If you’re on the land side of the levee, count your blessings. Yes, work is under way to shore up communities up and down the river, but instead of fretting about what nature may or may not be doing to disrupt day-to-day living, we can all use our energy to help someone who isn’t as lucky as we are.
This weekend, that’s exactly what hundreds of people did. They drove from far and wide to help sandbagging operations in towns small and large along the banks of the overflowing Mississippi. Notices went out at the region’s churches on Sunday morning, and by afternoon individuals had their shirt sleeves rolled up and were manning shovels to help with the cause.
Volunteers helped individuals, businesses and industries. They assisted public works and law enforcement agencies.
While volunteer efforts continue, we await the river’s main thrust.
And while the moment to moment news may not be happy, keep this in mind. Those who are out helping others are in control of their own emotional destiny. Make your day brighter by lending a hand to those in need.
