Hannibal, MO —

Mother Nature has caused many problems for people this summer with unusual precipitation patterns. While we’re familiar with the issues caused by June flooding and the situations affecting the planting and harvesting of crops, these are not the only issues of public concern.
While of less impact, the turf project at Porter Stadium is still an issue of concern to school district officials and sports fans. While work on the turf replacement project got under way in plenty of time for completion prior to the first home game scheduled for Aug. 29, frequent rains have forced delays in the planned schedule.
We learned this week that the season is still scheduled to kick off on home turf, but school officials are keeping a close eye on the construction project, just in case.
The rain during the past two months has delayed progress on the first phase on construction, which subsequently is delaying work on the turf installation.
When football does get under way at Porter Stadium, we anticipate that all involved will consider the worry and wait worthwhile. The community got behind this project with fundraisers and pledges, and the result will be a state-of-the-art field surface that will benefit not only football players, but other athletes and the marching band as well.
We appreciate the fact that Dana Ruhl, the school’s business manager, and the crew of George Lee Construction are working diligently to see that the project is completed in both a timely manner and with quality in mind.
Generations of athletes have played on this field in the past; and by bringing the field up to today’s standards, supporters are ensuring the quality of the playing field for years to come.
