Letter to the Editor: We need quality health care for all

The uninsured population is higher outside the metropolitan areas of Missouri. Why? Because private health insurance costs more in rural areas and employer-sponsored health care is more likely to be offered at firms who employ over 1,000 workers – few small town employers are even close to that scale.
The number of uninsured Missourians skyrocketed in 2006 at three times the national rate. Health care costs threaten us all. Rural residents, especially farmers and the self-employed, are totally priced out of health care coverage.
The private markets have failed us. That’s why we need a public plan option NOW. Thankfully, we have an historic opportunity to overhaul our inadequate health care system to level the playing field.
On June 25, thousands will go to Washington, D.C., to lobby Congress. I will participate in a delegation of seven  Missouri citizens.  Together, we will represent the interests of small business owners, doctors, and uninsured constituents.  We will demand a meaningful health care policy that we can all live with.  I work with families on a daily basis who are uninsured and must make difficult choices between groceries, medicine, and healthcare.  We need an all inclusive, affordable health care system.  I look forward to delivering this important message to Congress.
We must support our elected officials to do the right thing – pass a comprehensive, affordable, quality health care system to benefit us all.  Call Senators McCaskill and Bond and your U.S. representative and tell them your small-town health care story, and let them know you are on their radar!
