In the 1970s when the price of gasoline increased, other countries responded by producing more fuel efficient cars. The United States continued to build on the “bigger is better” concept. Now the crude oil prices are at a record high, all we have is gas guzzling cars. Americans continue to purchase these gas guzzlers. Could it be that the oil companies pay the auto makers to make more and bigger, fuel burning vehicles? Could it be that because we have an “oil man” in office as our president that the cost of gas continues to rise? It makes you think about it. It is a sad day in America when gasoline costs $ 3.59 a gallon and is expected to increase to $ 4 by summer.
Ethanol is not the answer either because more corn is used to produce ethanol. We felt the effects of that solution when milk prices rose to $3.80 a gallon. America must start using less gasoline and become less dependent on foreign oil or we will continue to see an increase in the price of gasoline which, in turn, increases the cost of groceries, utilities, and other goods and services. If Americans were not so concerned with status and appearance and became more concerned with our resources, we might actually leave something for our future generations.
