Hannibal, MO —

A community is like a classroom. People gather together in one locale in order to learn about - and with - others. In that classroom there are all types of personalities, each with unique learning skills. The information they learn together ultimately benefits all. Some might go on to be bankers, while others become writers. But each of those talents ultimately blend together for the good of the collective community.
Today, the Hannibal Courier-Post hosts its fall Newspapers in Education Auction. Coordinated by Debbie Quinlin of the Courier-Post staff, this auction brings together people of all skill sets for one central purpose: To put newspapers in the classrooms where they can be used as teaching tools.
Elsewhere in today’s edition you will see a listing of the merchants who already know the value the newspaper has in the classroom. They know that the newspaper is central to helping people understand what is going on around them, and that the information garnered from the newspaper is vital to helping citizens make decisions that are beneficial for the community as a whole.
In effect, the newspaper becomes the textbook in classrooms filled with tomorrow’s decision makers.
The newspapers of the land have built their reputations on offering unbiased information that people can then use to make up their own minds. While none are perfect, they are built by journalists with the vision of arming customers with the information they need to thrive.
The auction - with all proceeds going to the NIE program - begins at 3 p.m. today, and concludes with the awarding of bargains to silent bidders at 7 p.m.
We encourage you to participate. Whether your motivation is to find a bargain or to help a community-building cause, you’re bound to find something that piques your interest.
