Hannibal, MO —

The Hannibal Fire Department is undertaking major renovations at its facilities. At Station One, some significant structural repairs are planned to keep the building structurally sound.
At a recent council meeting, Chief Tim Carter reported that the bids were significantly higher than had been anticipated. However, Carter is already prioritizing aspects of the overall project to ensure the cost does not go beyond what has been budgeted.
It is also noteworthy that last week the fire department learned a regional grant application it submitted earlier this year has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This Assistance to Firefighters Grant money will be used to purchase a state-of-the-art mobile live fire trainer.
This device is important because it will provide a safer environment for firefighters to gain valuable experience facing various types of fire.
There is a local match of $64,000 that will be required in order to receive the federal funds. While the fire department could cover the cost, Carter plans to seek assistance in covering the match from entities such as the Division of Fire Safety, the Fire Education Commission of Missouri and Missouri Propane Association. Carter will also be approaching area fire departments seeking contributions for this piece of equipment which will be circulated throughout a 16-county area.
We applaud the Hannibal Fire Department for seeking innovative ways to accomplish its goals in regard to building upkeep and firefighter training.
