When pressed about the government’s runaway deficits, politicians often point to how they would rein in earmark, pork barrel projects and other wasteful spending. This approach is, of course, an utter obfusication.
Congress can share the blame for this dismal record for fiscal stewardship. They have slashed taxes on the wealthy, added an expensive drug benefit to Medicare, poored more than $500 billion into Iraq and rachetted up the defense procurement budget. For military contractors, the message has been unmistakeable; in the cause of the War on Terror, the spigots are open. Get it while you can.
It’s time for the excess to end. If the current administration and Congress aren’t willing to make tough choices among weapons systems and hold contractors accountable, the next one must.
