James M. “Jim” Angel, 78, of Philadelphia, Mo., passed away 2:40 p.m. Wednesday at his home. Jim was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Middletown, Mo., to James Ace Sr. and Mary Watson Angel. Jim married Sarah Evelyn Sherman May 18, 1958, in Pittsfield, Ill.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah; daughter, Ruth (Bob) Garner of Palmyra; grandson, Derrick (Melanie) Garner of St. Joseph, Mo.; brothers, Wesley Angel of Wellsville, Mo., Bob (Donna) Angel of Middletown, Mo., Dean Angel of southern Missouri, Joe Angel of Middletown, Mo., and Will Angel of Middletown, Mo. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Jane Elliott; and brother, Ace Angel Jr.
Jim worked for Bleigh Construction Co. for several years and then was a self-employed logger.
He had served his country during the Korean War and was a past member of the V.F.W. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Jim and his wife, Sarah, moved to the Philadelphia area more than 30 years ago and was blessed to have wonderful neighbors they considered family. Jim was always happiest being in the outdoors, fishing and hunting, especially with his grandson and son-in-law. He liked doing mechanical work such as on trucks, chainsaws, etc. He enjoyed helping other folks and had a soft spot in his heart for his little dog, Chipper.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Pastor Kevin Scott will officiate. Interment will be at the Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery near Philadelphia, Mo. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. Casket bearers are Ken Swisher, Greg Mitchell, T. J. Jones, Johnny Garner, Josh Mitchell, Joe Swisher, Aaron Zook and Jack Sharkey Jr.
Honorary bearer is Gary Jones.
