Lucas Gregory Utterback, 36, of Belleville, Ill., died at 12:40 p.m. on Friday, June 22, at home surrounded by family after 11 years battling brain cancer.

Lucas Gregory Utterback, 36, of Belleville, Ill., died at 12:40 p.m. on Friday, June 22, at home surrounded by family after 11 years battling brain cancer.

He was born Sept. 9, 1981 in Hannibal at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard E. "Bud" Arnold of New London, and his grandmother, Areleta Utterback of Monroe City.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Shelley and Ron Tennyson of Hannibal; his father, Greg Utterback of Belleville, Ill.; his brother- and sister-in-law, Wayne and Alicia Utterback of Chatham, Ill.; his sister, Paige Utterback of Lansing, Mich.; his grandmother, Fern Arnold of Hannibal; and his niece, Genevieve Utterback of Chatham, Ill.

Lucas was an expert with computers, having been a video game programmer for High Moon Studios, Sea Dragon Productions, LLC, NetDevil and Idol Minds. He also worked for Level 3 Communications, Churchill Navigation and Vail Resorts. Additionally, he did university research for NASA. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2006 with a Master’s Degree in computer science.

He was an avid video gamer, fan of science fiction, frequent rock climber, ska fan, brewery enthusiast and friend to many.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association in lieu of flowers.

A celebration of Luke’s life will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 30 at The Junction Restaurant in Perry.
