James “Jim” Thorington, 88, of Palmyra, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

James “Jim” Thorington, 88, of Palmyra, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Deacon Bob Leake will officiate. Burial with full military rites by Boots-Dickson Post #174, will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Palmyra.

Friends and family are invited to Jim's Life Celebration at a visitation that will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Jim was born March 15, 1929, in LaGrange, to James L. and Wilma Yager Thorington.

He was married to Marie Hudson on May 26, 1950, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Palmyra. She survives.

Other survivors include three children, Debbie Maize of Palmyra, Linda Janes (Jump) of Palmyra and Jami Wood (Gary) of Palmyra; one sister, Wilda Nelson of Quincy, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Knapp (Kevin), Travis Rice (Heather), Garret Rice, Lilly Wise (David), Curtis Gottman (Addy), Adam Gottman (Jessica), Jacob Gottman (Hannah), Joni Bock (Brent), Hunter Baggett (Emma), Cody Baggett, Erin Krupps (Philip) and Emily Wood (Jordan); 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Betty Meyers and Ann Parrish Clark.

Professionally, Jim worked for the Palmyra Board of Public Works, where he retired after being a foreman for many years. Prior to that, he worked at Crown Shoe Factory for 17 years.

Jim proudly served his county in the United States Marine Corp. from 1951 to 1953.

Jim liked to visit the Lake of the Ozarks and also go fishing at the North River Dam. He listened to big band and country music. Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams Sr. were a few of his favorite artists. Jim enjoyed dancing, especially the jitterbug. Most of all, Jim cherished the time he was able to spend with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He attended the St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Palmyra Parks and Recreation to restock the pond at the Flower City Park.

Pallbearers will be Curtis Gottman, Travis Rice, Adam Gottman, Garret Rice, Jake Gottman and Hunter Baggett.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald "Jump" Janes, Gary Wood, Jennifer Knapp, Kevin Knapp, Lilly Wise, David Wise, Joni Bock, Brent Bock, Addy Gottman, Heather Rice, Jessica Gottman, Hannah Gottman, Cody Baggett, Erin Krupps, Emily Wood, Ronnie Meyers, Eddie Dean Meyers, Rich Nelson, Grant Hess and Joyce Hess.
