Sylvia Lorene Todd Dixon, 92, of Grinnell, Iowa, died Sept. 9, 2017, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center.

A Scripture Service will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept 13, at the Smith Funeral Home with Father Ron Hodges, pastor at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell, officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve, Craig and Christopher Dixon, Mark McLaughlin, Tom Latimer and Andy Norris. Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice, Mayflower Human Needs Fund or St. Mary’s Building Fund.

Sylvia (Sylva) was born on March 18, 1925, to Oneita and Lloyd V. Todd in Shelbina, Mo.

On July 17, 1943, she was united in marriage with her high school sweetheart, Bob Dixon, in Shelbina. Bob and Sylva began their married years in Shelbina and raised eight children during their 68 years of marriage. In 1961, Sylva was honored as Shelby County, Mo., “Mother of the Year.”

The Dixons moved to Hannibal, Mo., in 1966. One of the highlights while living in Hannibal was their entertainment by Bob at piano and Sylva singing at various supper clubs. They also enjoyed entertaining at care facilities in the area. In 1986, they moved to Grinnell to work at ASI Sign Systems, from which they both retired.

Sylva was dedicated to her faith and family.

Survivors include seven children, Cheryl (Terry) Dillard of Mount Sterling, Ill., Dr. Robert “Steve” (Cheryl) Dixon of Black Hawk, Colo., Dianne (Tom) Latimer of Grinnell, Deborah (Andy) Norris of Stoutsville, Mo., Dorothea (Mark) McLaughlin of Grinnell, Craig (Jane) Dixon of Hannibal, Mo., and Christopher Dixon of Altoona; 15 grandchildren, Tim Dillard, Amy Carr, Brian Dixon, Stephanie Frances, Erin Carey, Ben Latimer, Greg Norris, Kelli Buescher, Dayna Ellis, Matt McLaughlin, Allison Kramer, Eric Dixon, Spencer Dixon, Bridgett Lane and Christopher “Lil’ Jode” Link; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her death were her parents and brother, Charles S. Todd; her husband, Bob; a daughter, Julie Link; and son-in-law, Terry Dillard.
