Verla Louise Schroer, 95, formerly of Hannibal, Mo., passed away on July 18, 2017, at the Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, Mo.

Verla was born on Aug. 18, 1921, at her parent’s farmhouse in Montgomery County, Mo. She grew up with her parents, John and Mabel (Brookshier) Stuart, and her two brothers, Melburn and Sidney.

On Jan. 19, 1942, she married Harold Schroer at the Chicago Temple in Chicago, Ill., and they were together until his death Jan. 20, 1995. They made their home in Hannibal, Mo., where Harold was stationed with the Mo. State Highway Patrol. There they raised their five children, Rebecca (Lon Smith) of Charlottesville, Va.; Gary (Linda) of Jefferson City, Mo.; Deborah (Alan Schnelle) of Batavia, Ill.; Martha (Steve Sarver) of Smithville, Mo.; and Mary Ann, who preceded her mother in death.

Verla was a devoted mother to her children, and was a talented seamstress making many costumes, clothes and other items for her children and their home. She was employed by the State of Missouri as a driver examiner clerk. Later, she volunteered at the Hannibal History Museum. She was a member of Arch United Methodist Church.

Verla enjoyed taking road trips with Harold throughout the U.S., and visiting their children and grandchildren.

In 2011, Verla left Hannibal and moved to Smithville, Mo. to be closer to family.

In addition to four of her children, Verla is survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.

At Verla’s request, no memorial services will be held. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Verla’s honor to Arch United Methodist Church, 56017 Ocean Wave Road, Hannibal, Mo. 63401.
