The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers responded to two incidents on the Mississippi River above St. Louis, both of which resulted in closures of the navigation channel at those locations.
While working to correct a channel alignment issue immediately upstream of Lock and Dam 25 at Winfield, Dredge Potter was dispatched to an emergency closure of the navigation channel by the Coast Guard five miles upstream of Lock and Dam 22 at Saverton in the Rock Island District. The notice to mariners was issued Wednesday.
Separately Thursday morning, a tow grounded about 1.5 miles upstream of Lock and Dam 25. The towboat and a helper boat were used to free the tow from the shoaling area. The grounding was outside the channel, but the result left the 11-barge tow and towboat blocking the channel. The Coast Guard never officially closed the channel at that location, but warned of shoaling in the area. St. Louis District’s survey boat, M/V Pathfinder is enroute to Lock and Dam 25 and will survey and reset the navigation buoys Friday morning, Sept. 3.
