A traveling exhibit, “I Have a Voice,” featuring photos of children and adults with Down syndrome, will be at the Hannibal Arts Council from Friday, Jan. 6, until Friday, Feb. 3.
The public is invited to view the exhibit, and also to attend the opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at the HAC Gallery, 105 S. Main St.
The reception will feature Jim Faber, president of the National Down Syndrome Congress, who will speak at 6 p.m.
Faber will speak on the limitless possibilities for individuals with Down syndrome, according to Michael Gaines, HAC executive director.
The exhibit will continue to be viewed by the public during the HAC Gallery hours, which are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
“The opportunity to host the traveling exhibit in Hannibal came to us from Kate Dougherty, president of Down County, a Hannibal-area organization focused upon Down syndrome awareness and education initiatives for individuals with Down syndrome,” Gaines reported.
“The portraits, paired with quotations, will allow audiences to get to know the unique and inspiring individuals photographed - not at a surface level, but more deeply. A glimpse beyond the diagnosis, and into their souls.”
Faber will meet the public at several area events from Jan. 5 to 7.
On Friday, in addition to speaking at 6 p.m. at the opening of the photo exhibit in Hannibal, Faber will speak at the Palmyra Character Education Team’s luncheon at noon at Breadeaux in Palmyra, Mo.
He will lead an assembly at the Palmyra Elementary School at 2 p.m. Friday, and will tour the Hannibal public schools’ new Pre-K/Kindergarten Center at 3 p.m.
