The wall-to-wall crowd that filled the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center in Hannibal, Mo., on Saturday, Jan. 28, took part in contests and taste-tested hot wings at seven booths, while helping fund the Great River Honor Flight scheduled in May. All past and present military personnel were admitted to the Wing Ding free.
The sponsoring Hannibal Jaycees and Miller Lite (Mark Twain Distributing) reported all the proceeds will be donated for the Great River Honor Flight in May.
The Rumor Has It booth won first place in the wing tasting contest.
Second place went to the POPS Club, which also won the prize for the best decorated booth, following the military theme of the Wing Ding.
Third place went to Great Clips. This booth also won second place in the best decorated booth contest.
At the POPS Club booth, Jason Standbridge refused to share the club’s “secret recipe” and Ron Egbert said their winning booth was because of “the love and commitment we put forth, like the POPS Club always does.”
Also serving wings were Spare Time, American Bikers Charities, the Steakhouse and Devil Wings.
The Devil Wings booth was manned by military personal from the U.S. Marines recruiting center that serves Hannibal and Quincy, Ill.
The Wing Ding “had a great turnout,” said Lea Irick, who co-chaired the event with Jamie McCoy of the Jaycees.
“We had a lot of military personnel here and some people from the Honor Flight,” Irick said. “I was really impressed.”
The next Great River Honor Flight, in May, will be taking World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., she said, and after that the trips will begin including veterans of the Korean War.
More than 1,700 people attended the Wing Ding, said Jaycee member Bryan Hammock, who served as emcee for the contests. He said at least 100 of this number were military personnel.
Hammock reported he visited with a man who helps organize the Honor Flights and was told one of the veterans at the Wing Ding had gone on the first Great River Honor Flight. He had served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.
Hammock also learned that “to date 303 World War II veterans from the tri-state area have taken Honor Flights.” He added that “the Jaycees are honored to be able to help out such a great cause.”
Five of the 10 wing tasting judges were military personnel, he added.
Mark Adams, owner of Mark Twain Distributing, also was pleased to report, “we had quite a few military guys,” adding that the theme for this year’s Wing Ding was MASH, and the veterans were honored by being giving an opportunity to sign a wall.
As the crowd prepared to compete in an obstacle course decorated with military decor, Jamie Berghager of the Jaycees was explaining the rules to the first contestant, Trista Feldkamp of Canton, Mo.
The course included jumping through a maze of tires, a pull-up and crawling beneath tables. The contestants were timed to determine the winners.
Richie Sly won first place, with Tristin Bruening taking second and Kevin Meany,
The wing bobbing contest winners were Anthony Majors, first place; Hadley Westlake, second; and Amanda Fish, third.
Winners of the wing eating contest were Adam Stinson, first; Brett Reading, second; and Tara Borger, third.
The teams winning the beer Olympics were Grand Hustle, first; Chocolate-Covered Cheese Monkeys, second; and Own it, third.
