All lanes of U.S. 36 in Macon County are open to traffic now after high water forced the Missouri Department of Transportation to close lanes in both directions around 9 a.m. today. The Chariton River bottoms area received between 2 and 4 inches of rainfall overnight, prompting flash flooding.
The highway was closed to traffic for approximately four hours between Bevier and U.S. 63. Early this afternoon the eastbound lanes were reopened. About 30 minutes later the westbound lanes were opened again.
Tammy Wallace, a community relations manager for MoDOT’s North Central District, said this morning traffic in the area had been reduced to a single lane for an extended period of time before the decision was made to shut down the highway entirely until the water receded.
