The federal health care discussion will be centered in Hannibal next week when U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill conducts a listening forum.
The event, announced Tuesday by McCaskill’s staff, will take place at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, in the gymnasium of Veterans Elementary School, 790 N. Veterans Road. Additional forums in Moberly and Kansas City are also planned Monday.
Persons planning to attend the Hannibal forum are asked to visit McCaskill’s Web site - http://www.mccaskill.senate.gov/hannibal082409/ - to sign up in advance since seating may be limited, depending on the turnout. Individuals with disabilities who require auxiliary aids or services to participate in the Hannibal event should contact Samantha Brewer at (573) 442-7130.
Maria Speiser, press secretary for McCaskill, would not speculate as to how large the turnout will be for the Hannibal forum.
“It’s always hard to say. Sometimes we’re surprised,” she said. “That’s one of the reasons we’re encouraging people to register online on our Web site so we can get a good sense of how many people to expect.”
McCaskill has already hosted forums in Kennett, Poplar Bluff and Jefferson County. According to Speiser those forums were informative.
“She always enjoys doing open forum, town hall type events. She did quite a few in April of this year so she had been looking forward to these and we had actually been planning on doing quite a few over the recess. For this last month or so they have been in the works,” she said. “I think she was looking forward to talking about health care because she does want to get that feedback from people, but also we’ve seen there is some misinformation about some of the legislation that’s out there. It’s always good to have that opportunity to hear from people and also explain what she knows about the legislation as well.”
McCaskill has not made any firm decisions regarding the health care debate, says Speiser.
“We don’t know what the final legislation is going to look like and what exactly is going to be included. The Senate as a whole has not voted and she’s not on the committees that have voted so far,” she said. “At this point she’s going to have to wait until she sees that final legislation to make any decisions upon on how she might vote.
“She has outlined some of those general principles that she’s looking to see in any bill and those include an increase in competition, bringing down costs for everyone and making sure consumers have more choices and have protections. In the end she is going to have to see that final legislation to make any decision.”
