Hannibal police will be doing a concentrated sweep for abandoned and junk vehicles in the next two weeks.
The effort has been done twice a year since fall 2006.
Officers will try to contact owners and give them 48 hours to comply with city ordinances on junk vehicles.
Authorities say the program has been successful.
During the first sweep in 2006, more than 100 junk vehicles were identified. Last spring, the number was 51, and only three had to be towed.
“Hopefully, a continued decline in abandoned or junked vehicles parked on the city streets will be recognized during this sweep,” Capt. James Hark said in a statement. “Residents are being asked to do their part to rid the neighborhoods of this problem by moving their vehicles if they are parked on the street in disrepair or non functional prior to the police intervention.”
